Mission Statement

In 1985 following the courageous and committed work of a group of visionary parents
Hazelwood opened its doors as one of only two integrated primary schools in Northern
Ireland and so a movement began.
For over three decades Hazelwood has provided an alternative to segregated primary
education in North Belfast. We, like all Integrated schools, have been a beacon for
reconciliation in our often bitterly divided community.
Our school reflects the rich cultural diversity of the communities in which we live. The
bedrock of our ethos continues to be a respect of difference and diversity.
We create unique, inclusive, and child centred leaning experiences that allow our
pupils and our staff to learn with one another, from one another and about one another.
By joining the Hazelwood community as a parent, pupil or member of staff you become
part of the peace process of Northern Ireland.
At Hazelwood we believe that we should not simply reflect society but help to change
it. The rich experiences of inclusiveness and mutual respect your child will receive, will
help them become advocates and ambassadors for peace and reconciliation, and so
play their part in helping to create a community that is shared and respectful of tradition
and identity.
At Hazelwood our teachers understand that learning is not something that is done to
children but is done by them. Working in close partnership with parents and carers our
dedicated teachers will provide challenging, creative and engaging learning
experiences to ensure that your child achieves and fulfils their potential.
We also understand that at times learning can be challenging. We are proud that
Hazelwood is a nurturing, child centred, caring school with a strong pastoral ethos.
We will ensure that our pupils are at the heart of everything we do. We will always
support your child so that they experience success along their learning journey.

We want your child to be curious, to have more questions than answers. To be
courageous, because doing the right thing can sometimes be the most difficult thing.
To be kind to others and understand the part they play in making a fairer more
compassionate world. To be creative, to love their learning and never to be afraid to
think differently. To be respectful of diversity and difference. At Hazelwood we
believe that difference is the essence of humanity. Finally, we want your child to be
happy and safe. We believe that children learn best when they are happy. The
positive and nurturing learning experiences we offer will help prepare our pupils to
confidently take their place in a world that they will one day help to influence and
shape.
